Blade composition: mainly 90MCV8, 45NCD16 and XC75, forged in 80 to 120 layers, giving a contrast varying from light grey to deep black after revelation.
Delivery condition: Annealed.
Use: when delivered, you can work the damascus block with standard tools (carbide drills recommended for drilling). From this block, you will need to carry out the following operations to create your blade:
- Trimming
- Drilling
- Heat treatment (see below)
- Grinding
- Polishing
- Revealing (see below)
Heat treatment after shaping: oil quench at 850°C, then temper at 180°C for 2 x 1 hour.
Revealing: For optimum revelation, mirror polish after quenching, then degrease with acetone before dipping in acid (15-30% sulphuric acid or iron perchloride). Remember to neutralise the acid after development by soaking the slide in a soda lye bath, for example. A second fine polish is recommended after development to obtain a perfect contrast between the different layers.
